TAFE NSW trade teacher wins major award

Fiona Shewring has been honoured by the National Association for Women in Construction (NAWIC) for her work to promote and advance women tradies. She received a golden hammer and a Crystal Vision Award.

‘The Crystal Vision award was for the work I have done to help change the current situation where only 1.25% of construction trades people are women,’ Ms Shewring said. ‘Many women who do go into a trade have strong male role models in their families, usually a father or brother, who have encouraged them to take up a trade as well. They don’t think they can’t do it.’

Ms Shewring’s book ‘Supporting Women in Non-Traditional Trades’ profiles 16 women in 10 trade areas. She interviewed each of the women and recorded their stories to demonstrate to both employers and women the diverse cross-section of women who take up a trade. She also won The Institute for Trade Skills Excellence Trade Teacher of the Year in 2007.

Ms Shewring said having a supportive employer with strong EEO (equal employment opportunity) policies was also key to the success of women in trades.

TAFE NSW wins Department of Defence tender

TAFE NSW has been successful in its bid to win a Department of Defence Business Skilling standing tender. This will involve TAFE NSW identifying and evaluating Defence training needs; then designing, developing, delivering and evaluating the training across a range of areas.

Three key requirements of the tender which led to TAFE NSW being chosen as a preferred training provider were: proven experience in delivery of training across Australia; highly skilled trainers able to meet the specialised training requirements of the Department of Defence; and proven expertise in a range of delivery options including eLearning, blended learning and face-to-face training delivery on Defence sites.

Winning this place on the standing offer panel will provide TAFE NSW and teaching sections with the opportunity to provide training across Australia for a range of Defence requirements.

This successful tender outcome also provides TAFE NSW with a strong platform to build on its capability in providing training for other large organisations requiring national delivery.
